#115 The Power of Sacred Chant
Dates: 4 Thursdays, April 5, 12,19,26 at 9:30 AM
Drawing on traditions from a number of faiths, including Judaism, Christianity, Sufi Islam, and Hinduism, Rabbi Swartz, who has studied sacred chant in places ranging from Santa Fe to Jerusalem to the Amazon, will explore how we can engage in sacred chant and how that can help us transform our lives. Chant lies at the intersection of the personal and the public, somewhere between individual meditation and group prayer. Chants can help us get out of our narrowness, become fueled by joy instead of anxiety, and live more mindful, present life. Most of all, through chant we can reconnect to the divine flow around us. The class will learn and practice 4-6 chants each session, as well as some of the transformative ideas behind each chant. While many of the chants themselves are in foreign languages, no understanding of any language besides English is involved, and no religious background is required.
